Computers Can Keep You Connected

Relationships are key to human existence today, and nothing can affect those relationships more than communication. Communication consists of sending and receiving encoded messages through a medium between two or more people. Where the people sending, the people receiving, and the messages themselves have relatively stayed the same throughout the years, digital media and computer technology have radically transformed the mediums we use to send messages to one another. Today, anybody with a computer and access to the internet can interact and communicate with family, close friends and co-workers all across the world from the comfort of their own home. In this article, we’ll look at two ways owning a computer (event a cheap computer, or “starter” computer) can allow you to communicate with your loved ones.

Email Changed Everything

It’s interesting to think back to the early days of our country, where it took weeks, sometimes months to receive mail from others, and this speed of delivery was considered fast. Today, mail through the postal service is often called “snail mail” because people can’t believe that it takes days to receive a letter from someone across the country. Email allows people to send letters to one another any where in the world in a matter of seconds. Email is the most commonly used form of internet communication. In its most basic form, a person’s email account consists of an online mailbox, from which he can send and receive information. There are numerous sites that host email accounts, and many company websites have email accounts connected with them. Email allows people to send out important information quickly to many people. Instead sending home printed letters or individually calling each person, an employer can now send one email to all of his employees updating them with the latest news and information. Another advantage to using email is that it allows people to send attachments with their text files. Attachments can be anything from word documents to PDFs to photos to videos to audio files to power point presentations, etc. People still enjoy the opening of envelope of a physical letter now and then, but more and more people are turning to email to send messages to one another.

Instant Messaging Arrives

Whereas email has adapted from “snail mail,” instant messaging has adapted from the telephone service. In short, instant messaging is a form of communication that has two or more people chatting live through an online channel. The advantages of using instant messaging include the following: it’s fast, it’s often free, it offers quick feedback, and you can talk with more than one person at a time. Once you’ve created an account on an instant messaging service, you add your friends’ screen names to your buddy list, and any time one of them is available, you can double click on his name and start chatting. Instant messaging is a great tool to use when trying to have a personal conversation with someone who’s across the country or even across the world. Another great use for instant messaging is when you’re seeking help at work or school. If you have a question while you’re working at your desk, you can quickly and efficiently IM your co-worker across the room and receive a response in a matter of seconds. You save yourself a phone call, as well as time away from your task at hand. Instant messaging is becoming a common practice in schools and workplaces today.
